The Griftpark, from past to present

This 7-part photo series connects the history and the present of the Griftpark. The turbulent history contributes to the unique character of the park. These grounds were previously used for the municipal gas factory and the Vaalthaven. After more than hundred years of service, the factory was demolished in 1962. Years of consultation between residents and the municipality followed about the new destination of the site. To the delight of residents, the city council decided in 1975 to create a city park. However, during the start of construction in 1978, it appeared that the soil had become heavily polluted by the former gas factory. The municipality then ceases work and hermetically seals off the site. After years of research into the best remediation method, the big clean-up finally began in 1990. The park officially opened in September 1999. The creation and current glory of the Griftpark largely owes its success to the dedicated participation of surrounding neighborhoods, then and now.

Soil remediation is a continuous process. Behind this fence are the measurement and control wells for the remediation. Remediation of the soil is expected to be continued well into the 21st century. A costly affair, but given its popularity, the Griftpark is worth the effort.

The photo series is a gift from the municipal working group Direct Supply to the park and its users. On the occasion of the 5th anniversary in September 2004.

At the 20th anniversary, a photo of the mature park was added in September 2019.
