Gertrude Chapel
When Catholics were forbidden to organize worship gatherings after the Reformation in 1580, a number of hidden churches were set up in the city, which had to be unrecognizable as a church. That of the parish of the Geertekerk – St. Gertrudis- Was from 1645 housed in a large 13th-century claustral house of the former immunity of St. Marie. Around 1697 – when the ban was lifted – the medieval house was converted into a real church with gallery and ecclesiastical furnishings. After a conflict and a break with catholic Rome, St. Gertrudis became the cathedral of the Old Catholic Church from 1723. When the new Gertrudis Cathedral on Willemsplantsoen was completed in 1914, the old church lost its function. During a major restoration in 1991 and 1992, an important part of the original color finish was restored. Since then, the St. Gertrudis chapel has been used as a meeting center.
