The Tea House on Rhijnauwen
In the spring of 1921, the Municipality of Utrecht decided to “place a simple tea house at a suitable spot in Rhijnauwen near the Kromme Rijn in order to give hikers, cyclists and rowers a resting place where they could find a pleasant pupation”.
The most suitable place for the tea house was mentioned as a place slightly more east and closer to the Kromme Rijn than where the tea house is now, approximately at the place where the playground is now. But “since this place falls within the small circle of the Rhijnauwen fort, which results in annoying restrictions in the implementation”, the choice fell on the current location (see also the other side of this information panel). The construction of the tea house in the style of the Amsterdam School cost 6500 guilders at the time.
In 1924, at the request of the tenant, a simple wooden house was built at the tea house. This is the area to the right of the main entrance. The tea house was expanded in 1997 on the banks of the Kromme Rijn with a design by architect Bertus Mulder, a student of Gerrit Rietveld. The extension, including a Japanese-style pavilion, flows naturally through the veranda into the Japanese garden, which was then redesigned.
