The Dom Church or Saint Martin's Cathedral (Dutch: Domkerk) is a remarkable Gothic church in the city centre of Utrecht. The cathedral is separated into two parts: the church and the tower. Due to a massive storm in 1674 the nave of the church collapsed and it has never been rebuilt. Nowadays the church only consists of the choir and the transept. Next to the church you can find a monastic garden with the cathedral's chapter house. These days it is used by the University of Utrecht as a ceremonial hall.
The Dom Church was built in 1254 to function as a Roman-Catholic cathedral in the Diocese of Utrecht. Just like its precedents, the Dom Church was dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, who was, and is, the patron saint of Utrecht. Up until 1898, the Dom Church was the only church built to be a cathedral in The Netherlands. However, the Dom Church's congregation has been protestant ever since the “Beeldenstorm” or Iconoclast Fury in the late 16th century.
The Dom Tower is without doubt the hallmark of the city of Utrecht. It is the highest church tower of The Netherlands, with an astounding 112,32 meters (368 foot) in height. The Dom Tower was built at the exact spot where the city of Utrecht was founded over 2000 years ago. These days, the tower is under construction as it is in need of thorough restoration. The Dom Tower's restorations started in January of 2020 and will last until the end of 2024. The Dom Tower has a unique collection of toll bells, as well as a carillon, which is still played by its carillonneur.
