Tower “The Horse”
Around 1600, Utrecht had an impressive outer city canal with thick defensive walls, towers and strongholds. The striking strongholds of Zonnenburg, Manenburg and Sterrenburg on the south side of the city have been preserved. In addition to the strongholds, defense towers were built in that period, which were named after animals, such as ‘The Bear', ‘The Fox' and ‘The Horse’. Defensive tower ‘The Horse’ was excavated during the work on the new canal in 2001. The Ruin has been restored with the connecting parts of the city wall. If you look across the street, you will see the original cellar entrance and a wall cupboard in the rear wall of the tower cellar.
