Noorderpark Ruigenhoek withholds beautiful nature and recreation areas, where you can exercise, play and relax. No matter the distance traveled; be welcome in ‘the largest backyard of Utrecht'. Be surprised by everything the area has to offer, throughout the seasons.
Meet the residents
During your walk you have the chance to come face to face with foxes, deer and hares. Or with large and small winged inhabitants such as kingfishers, herons, butterflies and dragonflies. Also discover the variety of tree and plant species and the alternation between forest and open plains where you can view beautiful pools, ponds and waterways.
Discover the culture
Noorderpark Ruigenhoek is part of the New Dutch Waterline ( Nieuwe Hollandse waterlinie. This work comprises series of forts, dikes and bunkers between the IJsselmeer and the Biesbosch, which were used to protect the west of our country from possible enemy threats. Visit one of the two fortresses and see the remaining bunkers. Continue to the trench, but for safety reasons it is forbidden to climb on the bunkers.
Sports and games
Romping, climbing, clambering, building huts; all is possible in the recreational forest with all kinds of natural play equipment. You can also skate in the skate park which is suitable for beginners and advanced. There is also a large playground in the Ruigenhoek part near hiking junction 41.
Slowing
There are various hiking routes in the area, from paved paths to stroll paths. There are plenty of nice picnic spots, as are quiet places where you can catch your breath amidst nature sites.
Walking
For a brisk walk, various distances can be walked, in which you walk from urban fringe park through rugged nature to traditional wide farmland. With the hiking nodes on the map, you can also plan a short detour or sporty tour along, for example, Fort Ruigenhoek and Fort de Gagel.
Ruigenhoek is also a recommendation to walk once. The 4 km children's route Gageltocht is highly recommended for children. The start of this route is at city farm Gagelsteede. All routes can also be found on the website.
